Turbo-Charging Affiliate Marketing - Working on the Keywords and Ad Groups
Seven Steps to Turbo-Charge Your Affiliate Marketing with Google Adwords
Step 4: Working on the Keywords and Ad Groups
A Quick review of where I’m at
I have the Turbo-Charged Affiliate Site running but it is anything but turbo-charged at present. I know some things I have to fix. I only have about 15 keyword phrases and they are the obvious ones most people would type in. My Ads aren’t wonderful either! But as they say, I have done something - and I now have to work through the problems and try and get some result. I see that Derrick VanDyke has sweetened the deal on his Sales Page for Affiliate Cash Secrets (Plug - You can buy through me on this page at the bottom right hand side) so maybe I can still catch the wave. I’m sure there are plenty of people just about to start clicking on keywords to do with affiliate marketing. I just have to find the long tailed keyword phrases they will be using and improve my Ads to get some more clicks and hopefully some conversions too. That should be easy ;o).
Anyway here are the Result so far
Now I have only put the Adword Campaign and the Landing Pages up and left them to see what happens. Whilst they weren’t “clicking” my door down, I hope I can learn and improve the response.
Here are the Results for all the Ad Groups
Affiliate Marketing is a very competitive market and I’m using keywords that are really primary search engine keywords and not long-tailed keyword phrases. But I am surprised that I have managed to get an average position of 15.4 on the Sponsored Ads pages. I’m told many people do click through the first two or three pages in a Google search when looking for information and so it means my Ads will be seen. “Make Money Online” is a highly popular keyword phrase and so is way down but maybe long tailed keywords around that keyword phrase may allow me to build it and get it higher on the pages. It is interesting to note it only cost $0.86 to get to this position using that keyword. Now I know that is expensive but I am hoping to lower that.
Ihave paid $31.27 since 6th August to find out what 15 of the most obvious keywords will bring me. I can now concentrate on finding long-tail keywords for each of the phrases and trying to lower my CPC at the same time. It makes sense to me to find out if the obvious keywords will work cost-effectively first. You don’t go to a shopping mall and park right at the back and furthest from the door do you? You at least try and get a closer parking spot if you can. It’s the same principle here except I have to pay for the privilege. But if the results show my keywords were in the 50’s or 60’s and all like that, then maybe I wouldn’t even try PPC with affiliate marketing. For $31.27 I have found out I can have a good shot at doing something here. At least I think so.
Here are the Results for the Ad Group “Affiliate Web Sites”
This example is for the Affiliate Web Site Group and I can see that my Quality Score is “OK” so I need to try and find a way to improve it and hopefully lower my Cost Per Click. But the CTR is not bad according to things I’ve read. I need to find a way to getting more clicks though as it is way too low. The advise I’ve read is to increase your Daily budget and although I would have thought $50.00 per day was okay for now especially since I’m not getting “clicked out” on that amount. I’ve set Ad Serving to Rotate and the Delivery Method as Accelerated. I’m only using the Google Search and not the networks. So how am I going to try and improve my Campaign Performance and get some sales?
Here’s my Plan to improve my Keywords
For the record I think that each time I hit a problem the best thing I can do is search the Internet for a tools that can help me solve it. The problems I have right now are listed below. I have bought several software programs to sue to hopefully help me solve these problems and do it efficiently.
-
Build a good Keyword List.
-
Make sure I have plenty of Relevant Long Tailed keyword Phrases in my list.
-
Sort those Phrases into tightly focused Keyword Ad Groups.
-
Create Ads for each Ad Group which are also tightly focused on the Primary Keywords I’m using on my Landing Pages.
-
Try out the Adword Optimizer tool in Google to see if it helps me improve my Ads.
The Software Programs I will use to try and improve my Campaign
The Tools I have purchased to help me do this are: (I am not an affiliate for any of them yet because I don’t know if I will keep them all).

Google Cash 3 by Chris Caprenter (Google Cash Detective Creator)
As you can see I mean business. I need to understand how to really get keywords and Ad Groups working for me!
Wow! I can almost hear many of you say why are you using all those programs? This is what I think. I think that I need to find out what works and whether the programs I buy really do help me get my Internet Business going. So I am prepared to purchase these programs and if I cannot get them to work for me and help me create an income within the trial period, I will return them. Isn’t that why they offer a trial? Many programs I try are very good but are not for me once I get to try them. Either they don’t work the way I think they should or they have problems or short-comings that prevent me from achieving my objective. In which case I return them with thanks and I search the Web to find others that might suit me better.
Keyword Lists - The problem I need to overcome
Ineeded to find a way to get a large list of long-tailed keywords and be able to manage and organise them into groups. Then create Ad Groups with them. I don’t want to do this using spreadsheets or notepad. That is just too long and laborious. And I wanted something that allowed me to see all my Ad Groups as I developed them. Many programs allow you to create Ad Groups one at a time. I don’t think is such a neat and tidy way. My mind goes all over the place when I see a large list of keywords. I can create an Ad Group and then realise it would be better to break it up and create another Ad Group and put some of the keyword in yet another Ad Group. I need to assimilate the list and get a feel for the phrases and try and see inside the heads of the people that typed in those phrases in the first place. This should help me target my Ad Groups and my Ads to appeal to each of them.
For instance I created a site to sell “smoke alarms”. Yes, I know I was green and did not understand as much as I do now. But I am making some sales and the conversion rate is about 1.5% which is not bad. The bonus is most people purchase two or more smoke alarms at a time. So it makes it profitable too. But back to my point.
If a keyword phrase is ‘’smoke alarm legislation” then it might be that person is more concerned about the legal issues with smoke alarms than the price. So I create an Ad Group built around their concern and use that Keyword Phrase in the heading of the Ad and in other places if I can. If another person types in “Cheap Smoke Alarms” then my Ad Group will have keyword phrases tightly focused on phrases with “cheap” in them as will my Ad, because I assume that person is only interested in finding the cheapest smoke alarm. I may even put the price in that Ad so if my ‘cheap” is not their “cheap”, they won’t click on my Ad.
In my Next Article by 25th August I will…
Include details of the Campaign so far - good or bad. I will include the results of adding long-tailed keywords to my Campaign. Plus I’ll give a quick review of how well I was able to use the software I purchased to help me create the Ad Groups and improve my Google Campaign. I might even be able to report a sale!
